OUR INDEPENDENT'S DAY
IS COMING

The Community Independents movement in Australia is a remarkable resurgence of morality and honesty in Parliament. This is about restoring integrity, embracing science, and ensuring safety.

It is also about reestablishing respect for women and upholding the values that mothers hold dear.

#COMMUNITY INDEPENDENT

Corio deserves better than Canberra’s politics of drift

"This is not about left or right. It’s about long-term thinking versus political cowardice. Corio – and Australia – deserves leaders with the courage to make wiser, and safer, long-term choices," writes Mik Aidt. → Read more

"This is the most important vote that I will make in my lifetime."

~ Admiral Chris Barrie, interviewed on the ABC about climate, security, leadership failure and the coming federal election

The Climate Council is urging Australia’s political parties to get serious with their emissions targets. In a recent report, the Climate Council have shown how Australia can reach net zero carbon by 2035.

Labor's plan however is to continue using climate-wrecking fossil fuels beyond 2050, and to continue subsidising and supporting the industry with billions of taxpayer dollars.

We can do better than this! This is where the Community Independents movement come in:

PUT CLIMATE FIRST

STRONG POLICIES AND SOLUTIONS FOR CLIMATE

Today there are more than 100 community groups across Australia, typically named “Voices of” or “Voices for”, that are searching for or already have endorsed independent candidates to front their campaigns at the federal poll. As a result, voters will have a new political choice to break the deadlock. In Corio, we are looking for the right candidate to support. Also, we support the national movement financially with donations.

HOW YOU

CAN HELP

Right now, we are raising more money to level the playing field for a pro-climate safety, pro-integrity, and pro-gender equality representative in Corio.

To do that, we go letterboxing and door-knocking in our community and talk with voters about how they feel represented, about how they can support the Community Independent movement, and how they can help our Corio initiative.

"The success of Zali Steggall, and other independents have inspired a growing number of “climate independent” candidates seeking to unseat vulnerable Coalition parliamentarians at the next election, targeting the government’s failures to set meaningful climate change policies."

BACKGROUND

Simon Holmes á Court's Climate200 is fighting for science-based climate policy by raising funds. At the last election, more than 11,000 donors raised over $13 million – which was allocated to suitable independent candidates in key seats. This movement has sparked a genuine political revolution in Australia.

STEPPING UP TOGETHER

GENUINE REPRESENTATION

In order to stop the escalating climate crisis, the flow of money to coal, oil, and gas companies must be stopped. And the flow of money back from coal, oil and gas companies to political parties must also end.

TheCommunity Independents' 2025-election victory has been a huge inspiration for other communities. The independent voices in Parliament will be totally rewriting the next decades for Australian politics.

In Geelong in 2019, we created the #PutClimateFirst alliance of Council candidates to advocate for stronger climate action in Geelong Council. As a result, two concillors were elected as for their Put climate first agenda.

IN SEARCH OF A LOCAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for an independent candidate who will run in the Corio electorate. We will make the next federal election a community election.

We are calling for all residents of the Corangamite and Corio electorates who believe there is an urgent need for
stronger, community-driven representation in Federal Parliament. Get on board and join the movement!

Why VOTE INDEPENDENT?

Australia's democracy is broken, and the two major parties have shown again and again over the last decade that they are not willing to fix it. No one is coming to fix it, unless we - the Australian people - do something about it.

Voting in more independent politicians who have integrity and who listen to their community is the only way it can be done. Independents like Zali Steggall and David Pocock have shown us the way forward.

Why is this important for the climate? In Greta Thunberg's words: "Democracy is everything. We can't save the living planet without it.”
